This is a series of etchings done on seven separate plates and printed on a single sheet of paper. The prints are signed in pencil by the artist and dated 1977. The title is Seven Ages of Man, based on the famous "All the World's a Stage" speech from Shakespeare's As You Like It. The style of the etchings is pure Punk, with a strong influence of artists such as Ralph Steadman, and further back William Hogarth. The figure of Mr Punch features heavily in the etchings, as well as his dog Toby - and there is a wealth of detail in the prints. John W Hewitt is a printmaker, artist and film animator who works as an artist and teacher in Manchester. This print dates from his time as a student in that city. He has long had a relationship with Punk, and in the early 1980s accompanied The Pogues on tour as a sketch artist.
