Paris, Chez LAuteur, Chez Carillian-Goeury, Chez MM.Bordeaux Frères, Chez Les Principaux Libraires. No date but circa 1860. Large folio. Title page and 60 numbered tinted lithograph plates including 5 double page plates and a very large folding plate showing multiple views of a large marquee. A beautifully illustrated and comprehensive professional manual of drapery manufacture illustrating many examples of the sumptuous drapery popular in Europe in the mid-19th century. The first few plates illustrate the practical geometry of drapery design. These are followed by plates that illustrate numerous examples of ornate window curtains, heavy draperies to enclose small settees, to cover the entrances to stairwells, detailed examples of embroidered appliquéd devices for the use on drapery, techniques for hanging curtains, drapery designs for beds, for use as wall coverings, dressing tables, decorative ceiling coverings, drapes for babys cribs, drapes to cover staircase handrails and the manufacture of marquees and construction of their poles. The final few plates illustrate types of curtain rails and all sorts of mechanical devices for opening curtains, blinds, awnings and windows with the final plate illustrating a range of tools and fittings used in the trade. Many of the plates include cutting diagrams and much in the way of fine detail. An important reference work in the field of mid-19th century ornamental drapery design and manufacture. Bound in contemporary quarter sheepskin with marble paper sides and gilt decoration to the spine. Extremities of the binding a little worn and with small splits to the lower few centimetres of the front hinge and both the upper and lower few centimetres of the rear hinge. However, both covers are still very firmly attached. Occasional dust-soiling and finger-marking throughout the page block. A large but fairly faint water stain affects the upper and lower corners of all of the plates. The large folding plate showing a marquee has a few tears to some of its folds and has been neatly reinforced with archival repair tape on its reverse along the line of a number of the folds. Otherwise, this is a reasonably clean copy of an uncommon and spectacular reference work with the page block sound and the binding in good condition.
