An association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper just after publication: "for Hubert Bermont from Edward Abbey, with best regards. Sonoita, Sonora : March '68." The book was published in February, making this a very early inscribed copy, either in the first or second month of publication (the exact date seems hard to find). Hubert Bermont was the executive director of the illustrious Brentano's Bookstores from 1957-1967 before becoming an independent publishing consultant and author on that subject. One of the classics of American environmental writing, Abbey writes of his time as a ranger at Arches National Monument and of its desert geology and wildlife, takes a last float trip through Glen Canyon, bemoans and sabotages road development, and in general goes straight to the heart of things, to bedrock. With illustrations by Peter Parnall. A very good plus copy with just light foxing and toning to the top face of the text block, otherwise near fine. In a very good dust jacket with wear and a little loss to corners and spine ends, as well as one quarter-inch-diameter hole at mid-spine. The earliest signed copy currently on the market.
