The Lewis Bard: Eilean An Fhraoich [Songs, Edited By Ina Macleod, With Illustrations, Including A Portrait] Murdo Macleod; Ina Macleod

Introductory material in English; songs in Scottish Gaelic. 1961 signed presentation copy, Stornoway Gazette Ltd. (Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland), 5 7/8 x 9 inches tall blue cloth hardcover, no dust jacket, gilt lettering to front cover and spine, illustrated with black-and-white photographs, 99 pp. Moderate to heavy soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with bumping and fraying to the tips. Slight soiling to blank endpapers, with occasional light marginal soiling elsewhere. Nicely signed and inscribed on the blank front free-endpaper by the editor, the daughter of Murdo Macleod, Mrs. Ina (Johnina) Macleod. Otherwise, a very good, clean copy of a rare work. OCLC (No. 622379606) locates only two copies at institutions worldwide - at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, and the The British Library, St. Pancras. ~R~ [1.5P] The Isle of Lewis is the largest and northernmost island of the Western Isles or Outer Hebrides archipelago in Scotland. Covered with heather, the Island is known as 'The Heather Isle' or 'Eilean an Fhraoich.' This Gaelic song in praise of the Island was composed by the Lewis Bàrd Murdo Macleod of Leurbost (Murchadh a? Cheisdear), 1837-1914, and is regarded as the Isle of Lewis' unofficial anthem. This Scottish Gaelic transcription of the song is prefaced by an extensive introduction by daughter Ina Macleod (1894-1987).
