"The Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) erupted as a result of complex geopolitical factors, including Prussia's rising ambitions, German nationalism, French fear of encirclement, and selfish diplomatic maneuvering. The results were devastating for France - Emperor Napoleon III was captured, Paris was occupied, and Alsace-Lorraine was (temporarily) lost, while Germany was unified in statehood with its victory. This detailed war map of France was published as a supplement to Harper's Weekly magazine in December of 1870. At the time, Paris was under siege and German victory was all but assured. Accompanying text, written with a somewhat Francophile attitude, describes the current situation and course of events to date.
