The first edition of Pimentel's sequel to A Triste Canção do Sul: subsidios para a historia do fado, which had been the second book published on Fado. In the present work, Pimentel turns his eye to the folk musics of Northern Portugal, romanticizing them as a rural art form distinct from the music of the urban areas and the South, which he associated with Fado. For a discussion of some of the ideological underpinnings inherent in this work, and the influence of the theories of Basílo Teles on Pimentel's work , see João Silva's Entertaining Lisbon, pp. 177-81. An essential work to understand the early conceptions of the history of Fado and other Portuguese musical forms. An uncut example, with the wraps thumbed, tidemarked and stained.
