Firenze [Florence] - Street Map Of Florence Issued To Members Of The U.S. Fifth Army. V.S. Gallo

This colorful city plan of Florence, Italy was distributed compliments of the Fifth Army Officers' Rest Hotel to local Allied troops on leave. The neatly ordered streets and verdant parks obfuscate the heavy devastation endured throughout the war, including occupation by German forces and heavy aerial bombardment. A pre-war base map appears to have been used, as several of the depicted medieval bridges were destroyed during the conflict. The Rest Hotel and Enlisted Men's Center are overprinted in red and over fifty different locations of interest are numbered along the bottom of the page. Several illustrations on the verso present picturesque scenes across the ancient city. Cartography by V.S. Gallo. Published locally by Albergo Anglo-Americano, probably in late 1944 or early 1945.
