Fading / spotting edge of rear board. Very good condition. The Challenger expedition of 1872 - 1876 was a grand scientific tour of the world covering 68,000 nautical miles. It was a scientific programme that made many discoveries to lay the foundation of oceanography. John Murray the oceanographer on the voyage called the Challenger Report "the greatest advance in the knowledge of our planet since the celebrated discoveries of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries". Henry Nottidge Moseley (1844 - 1891) was one of the naturalists on the expedition. The book includes a memoir of his life. Moseley describes not only his zoological findings but also many observations on the wide variety of places that the Challenger visited. A folding colour map shows the track of the Challenger and the track of the earlier voyage of the Beagle. Moseley contributed the Report on Certain Hydroid, Alcyonarian, and Madreporarian Corals to the final Challenger Report.
