This unique manuscript map and accompanying description sheet were created by J.R. Curry in 1821, as dictated by a court-ordered survey issued by the Harrison, IN Circuit Court in August of that year. The resulting map outlines the property boundaries of a parcel in Lincoln Township, La Porte County, at the fork of Mill Creek. The waterway is shown meandering through the center of the sheet. A stippled compass rose in the lower left indicates the page is oriented with west at the top. Several keyed points representing survey markers and landmarks (including a cabin) are detailed in the handwritten explanation. Created just a few years after Indiana's statehood, the map and page of text are early reflections of settlement across the northern parts of the Hoosier State. A supplemental extension has been affixed to the upper right and has since separated and been re-attached with archival tape. Accompanying the map is a text description and explanation providing additional context. Heavy wear and minor image loss where previously folded in half. About good condition overall for the pair.
