First published in 1997 this volume departs from conventional analyses of Botswana’s political economy and focuses on the second phase of Botswana’s capitalist development from 1966-1990 arguing that even in a formally liberal democratic country the imperatives of economic growth and development in a capitalist context give rise to the state’s close supervision and control of organised labour.
