Dolores. [ A Wise/Forman Forgery] Swinburne, A.C. Forgers And Forgeries

Contemporary calf, green leather spine-labels, gilt triple border, all edges gilt, dentelles, 23 pp. A forgery (by Thomas James Wise and/or Harry Buxton Forman) identified as such by Carter and Pollard in 'An Enquiry into the Nature of Certain Nineteenth Century pamphlets' principally by virtue of its type being 'Clays Long Primer No. 3 with the distinguishing characteristics which were not manufactured before 1880'; the paper is also suspect. As Carter and Pollard conclude "This pamphlet is clearly a forgery ; but the object of forging it when it does not even pretend to be a first edition is difficult to understand'. The forgery purports to be printed in 1867 and the poem it contains had appeared in Swinburne's Poems and Ballads in 1866. [Todd 295f], Armorial bookplate of Oliver Noel Chadwyck-Healey on front pastedown endpaper, blemishes to foot of front board, boards a trifle scuffed, otherwise Very Good.
