First edition in German, first printing, of an obscure polemic by an American Jew, Germany Must Perish, which proposes the eradication through mass sterilization of the German people and the erasure of Germany from the map, here cynically reprinted by the Nazis to incite hatred and war fervour among the German people. The author, Theodore Kaufman (1910-1986), self-published his polemic in New York the same year. He described himself as the President of the American Federation of Peace - an organization that did not exist, and there is no evidence of his involvement in any significant American Jewish organizations. Nonetheless, Joseph Goebbels seized upon it as proving the aim of world Jewry for the destruction of Germany and representing normal Jewish opinion. Goebbels had the book repeatedly reprinted in Nazi Germany and referenced it throughout the Second World War. He wrote in his diary on 3 August 1941: "He really could not have done it better and more advantageously for us if he had written the book to order. I will have this book distributed in millions of copies in Germany, above all on the front, and will write a preface and afterword myself. It will be most instructive for every German man and for every German woman to see what would happen to the German people if, as in November 1918, a sign of weakness were given" (cited in Herf, p. 112). The German translation includes commentary by Wolfgang Diewerge, director of the radio division in the Propaganda Ministry, which explicitly called for genocide: "What would happen if instead of eighty million Germans, twenty million Jews were treated according to the proposals of their racial comrade Kaufman? Then peace would be secured" (translation in Herf, p. 114). Julius Streicher cited the book at the Nuremberg trials as proof his actions were justified. The front cover features an illustration of the author at his typewriter. The rear cover features Kaufman's map, which shows a potential partition of German territory resulting in a Holland at least four times its present size, Berlin in Poland, and Munich in France.
