The novel follows the senior year of a college football player, on the field and off, including his course work, nightlife, and relationships. From the introductory page: "Like a full-back plunging for a goal, this honest and powerful novel forges ahead to its goal - a drastic response of the American college system. The barbarism of football, the tyranny of the coaches, the exams, the club snobbery, the cutting loose after games, the furtive sex adventures, the barrenness of culture in these supposed citadels of culture - all get rough but fair treatment. No college novel like it has yet been written. Based on the author's diaries, reconsidered in soberer after-college life, it combines the fervor of immediate experience with balanced judgment and matured literary skill. From a 1931 review in "The Harvard Crimson" (the daily newspaper of Harvard University): "If there is any need of exposing condition in the past of Harvard football, 'Time Out' supplies material for the blithest of muckrakers. In what year Mr. Forman played football 'in a large university' we cannot determine; he is not listed, under that name, in the Harvard records. If there has been at Harvard 'barbarism and brutality, the savage tyranny of coaches, frenzied methods of whipping up fighting spirit,' Mr. Forman has exposed all this. But we seriously doubt the truth of his assertions." Condition: Small tear at the right edge of front cover. Light soiling to back cover. Sharp cover corners. The book leans to the right a bit. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. The text pages are lightly age-toned & mostly clean w/ only a smudge at outer edge of copyright page, & a 1" tear at outer edge of page 37. The outer half of the introductory page & rear end papers have heavy age-toning. Name stamped in ink on front pastedowns. The front end paper has the letter "W" and "Please be kind to this book" stamped in ink. The rear pastedown has the letter "M" stamped in ink. The rear end paper and pastedown have smudging/staining. The front end papers and the following introductory page each have a thin, light stains strip at the outer edge. Overall the book is in Good- condition. The dust jacket is in Poor condition due to the front flap having been removed, and a sizable piece missing at the top of the spine; clear tape over tears on back-side.
