Language corpora – collections of texts in electronic form, which can be analysed using computational techniques – have come to represent one of the major resources in descriptive and applied linguistics today. The papers in this volume, originally presented in a workshop at the 5th conference of the European Society of the Study of English (ESSE) at Helsinki, illustrate the potential of corpora as tools for the study of contemporary English end for English language teaching and investigate a series of methodological issues, offering a variety of potential models for small-scale research.
