In the 1840s, he served under Napoleon III in Algeria, and was the first U.S. citizen awarded the French Légion d'Honneur decoration. In 1862, he was killed in action at the Battle of Chantilly, Virginia. He remains New Jersey's most famous soldier. Chapters in this volume include: "Service with the French troops in Africa", dated 1844, from his diary; "Philip Kearny: a biographical sketch", by Maj. Gen. John Watts De Peyster; "Kearny at Seven Pines: a poem", by E.C.
