Light handling wear to the dust wrapper edges. The book has mild compression to the corners. The upper text block edge has moderate foxing marks. First edition. Signed by the illustrator Peter Firmin underneath the frontispiece illustration and dated by him in the year of publication. In the corner of the same page he has inscribed "For oliver with love Peter". More likely, due to the warm inscription, it is to his long time bagpuss, noggin and clangers collaborator Oliver Postgate. Peter Firmin was commissioned with the task of illustrating Vita Sackville West's poetry from her titles The Land and The Garden. The book is profusely packed with his illustrations. With an introduction by Nigel Nicolson.
