History Of The Afro-American Group Of The Episcopal Church Bragg, George Freeman, 1863-1940 African American Authors,African Americana,Religion

frontis (portrait), photos, 319p. Original blue cloth. 21 cm. Faint evidence of absent labels or pockets on rear free endpaper -- perhaps a church library. Faint marking on backstrip from a now absent small label. Cover otherwise bright and clean except for loss of some gilt on last two letters in "Group" in title on front cover. Internally sound and clean. No jacket. An appealing copy. Bragg, an African American, was born into slavery in North Carolina and grew up after the war in Petersburg, Virginia, where he graduated from Bishop Payne Divinity and Industrial School in 1886. He became rector of St. James Episcopal Church in 1891 and remained there for the rest of his life. Bragg wrote several books and edited and published a couple of journals.
