"The Reichsrat Electoral Map of Austria Based on Equal and Universal Suffrage" - Approximate title translation. This uncommon and unusual pocket map of Austria was published in Vienna by the firm of Freytag & Berndt in 1907. At the time, the nation was part of the 'dual monarchy' with Hungary, but those lands have been omitted to focus attention on the different Austrian provinces. During the early 20th century, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was undergoing a period of intense stress as economic inequality and intense regional nationalism spread across the largely artificial multi-national state. Disparate minority groups like Slavs, Jews, and Turks were clamoring for greater political representation, leading Emperor Joseph I to expand suffrage to all males in Austria for the 1907 election. This map, highlighting the composition of the Reichsrats (Imperial Council), reflects the results of that momentous shift in political power. Austrian territory from the Dalmatian coast to Galicia is segmented into different municipal and jurisdictional borders. Each is colored according to the victorious party, showcasing a patchwork of varying groups, many with competing interests. A series of charts and statistics in the lower right shows the evolution of various political groups in the Austrian House of Representatives, comparative sizes of nationalities, and the economic performance of different parts of the Empire.
