Geographical and Historical Map of China.(Old Maps, 19th Century Maps, Asia, Qing Empire, China, Korea, Taiwan, Beijing, Peking, Hong Kong). Issued 1821, Philadelphia by T. H. Palmer for M. Carey & Sons. Third ed. Engraved by Kneass, Young. Historically significant early 19th century engraved folio sheet map with original hand color. Kneass was chief engraver to the U. S. Mint. Great large map relating to China. Encyclopedic text relating to the climate, forms of government, commerce, natural history, religions, languages and more surrounds the map. Final text section titled "Empire of Japan". Remains a nice looking example with pleasing age patina. Moderate age toning, some damp staining & foxing across sheet, top center of sheet slightly more age toned. Someone long ago neatly noted specific dates with a most interesting manner of noting their interest. Great looking map with an interesting twist regarding the notations which will become visible if you study them for a moment. Original centerfold as issued. The heavy paper is somewhat brittle and requires delicate handling. Nice large antique map with a mellowed age patina, looks exactly what you'd imagine an early 19th century folio sheet map might look like if found sitting in a pile of old papers up in an attic.
