The date only appears on the Title page on the first printing of each book, and at no other time. The Fellowship of the Ring, 1954, front hinge cracked, light shelf wear. Second state dust jacket, as issued, without broken 'd' in 'Frodo' on the rear flap, neatly price-clipped, with light wear. Most extant copies of the first impression of The Fellowship of the Ring have been recorded with the first state jacket, with most originally issued by Houghton & Mifflin with the second state dust jacket. The Two Towers, 1955, light shelf wear. Second state dust jacket with a single tape repair verso, chipping and closed tears. The Return of the King, 1956, contents clean and bright throughout. First state dust jacket with light chipping and closed tears. There are no signatures, inscriptions or book plates. All three books have the map present.
