Octavo, original leather binding, illustrated with a map of the British expedition and numerous drawings by Melton Prior and other artists. In very good condition. Library bookplate to the front pastedown with the Latin motto 'Vicilans Non Cadet' - 'The vigilant man falls not.' The library was named in honour of Sir Henry Behrend, Chairman of The Jews’ Hospital and Orphan Asylum at West Norwood, England. Special correspondent of The New York Herald and gold medalist of The Royal Geographical Society, Henry M. Stanley, composed this record of British expedition and battle in the mountain-town of Magdala, located 10,000 feet above sea level and surrounded by valleys thousands of feet deep, as a way of preserving a history of successful English fighting and exploration.
