This, the second printing from 2022, was a special one indeed: it was issued exclusively as a collector's edition limited to 100 special copies only, each selected, introduced and SIGNED by Roy Thomas to the publisher's authorized slip to front end-paper. The legendary Roy Thomas, American comic book writer and editor, was Stan Lee's first successor as editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics and possibly best known for introducing the pulp magazine hero Conan the Barbarian to American comics. This sumptuous production (304 pages printed in 4-colour throughout) collects twelve archetypal stories, selected by Thomas, from almost sixty years of crime-fighting adventure. It's a suitably striking, hardback edition that comes sheathed in a beautiful blue-and-red slipcase stamped with the iconic sigil, while the cover features original artwork by Marcos Martín, the multiple-award-winning Marvel artist famed for his work on Spider-Man. However, it is the inclusion here of an additional element that adds an extra layer of attraction: housed within its own pocket inside the slipcase is a remarkable facsimile of The Amazing Spider-Man #1. This is a lovely scale replica comic - avoiding all digital remastering, Folio scanned an original collector's copy, leaving no authentic detail excluded, from vintage toy ads to grains in the newsprint. Notes: Roy Thomas has been a writer and often editor in the comic book field since 1965, when he gravitated to Marvel to become Stan Lee's assistant and protégé. He succeeded Stan Lee as Marvel's editor-in-chief in 1972, and was only the second person to script a Spider-Man story. He has been at the forefront of the comics industry for much of his life and is credited with co-creating, amongst other characters, Wolverine, Vision, Carol Danvers, Ultron, Iron Fist, Red Sonja, Ghost Rider, Nighthawk, Banshee and Valkyrie. Thomas is currently editor of the fanzine Alter Ego, and in 2011 was elected to the Will Eisner Hall of Fame.
