"There can be little doubt that Jemmy Catnach, the printer, justly earned the distinction of being one of the great pioneers in the cause of promoting cheap literature - he was for a long time the great Maecenas and Elzevir of the Seven Dials district." (frontis). James Catnach (1792 - 1841) was an Alnwick-born printer and publisher. He became a major publisher of chapbooks in the Seven Dials district of London. Hindley's book describes and copiously illustrates Catnach's work, particularly in the emerging field of printed chapbooks for children.
