Seed Pre-treatment: To improve seed germination rate, magnolia seeds need to be pre-treated before sowing. Magnolia seeds have a hard outer shell that prevents them from absorbing moisture and germinating, so they need to be treated to break their dormancy. A common method is to soak seeds in warm water, keeping the water temperature at 30 - 40 ℃ , soak time is 24 - 48 hours. During the soaking process, change the warm water every 6-8 hours to maintain water temperature and clean water quality, allowing seeds to fully absorb moisture. After soaking is finished, scoop out the seeds and wrap them in moist gauze cloth, then place them in a warm, well-ventilated area with soft lighting for germination. Use clean water to rinse the seeds 1 - 2 times daily to keep them moist and prevent moldy and spoiled seeds. Generally after 5-7 days, some seeds will show white radicles, at which point they can be sown. In addition, for some varieties that are difficult to germinate, sand storage treatment can also be used. Mix seeds with moist sand in a 1:3 ratio thoroughly, place in a breathable container such as a flower pot or woven bag, and set in a cool, ventilated area. During the sand storage period, check the humidity of the sand regularly to keep it moist but not overly wet. After 1 - 2 months of sand storage treatment, the seeds' dormancy is broken and their germination rate significantly increases. Seeding Containers and Soil Preparation: Container Selection: If using pots, it is recommended to choose pots with a diameter of 20 - 30cm and depth of 20 - 25cm cm. The pots should have drainage holes at the bottom to ensure smooth drainage and avoid water accumulation causing seed rot. The material for flower pots can be chosen from ceramic pots, plastic pots, or purple clay pots. Ceramic pots have good air permeability, plastic pots are lightweight and affordable, while purple clay pots have excellent aesthetics. You can choose according to your preference and actual situation. If choosing to plant in a courtyard, the soil needs to be deeply tilled to a depth of 25 - 35cm before planting to make the soil loose and breathable, creating favorable conditions for seed growth. While cultivating deeply, it can clean up stones, weeds, and other debris from the soil, ensuring a uniform soil texture. Soil preparation: Magnolia flowers are suitable for growing in fertile, loose, well-drained slightly acidic soil. You can mix soil yourself by combining decomposed leaf soil, garden soil, and perlite in a 3:2:1 ratio evenly, then add an appropriate amount of organic fertilizer such as composted chicken manure, sheep manure, or cake fertilizer to enrich the soil with sufficient nutrients. Decomposed soil is rich in humus, which can improve soil structure and increase soil fertility; garden soil provides essential minerals and nutrients needed for plant growth; perlite can enhance soil porosity and drainage. If you find it troublesome to mix soil yourself, you can also directly purchase specialized flower planting soil. When buying, make sure to choose soil that is slightly acidic, breathable, and rich in nutrients. In addition, to ensure that the soil pH is suitable, you can use pH test strips to detect the soil's acidity and alkalinity, maintaining soil pH between 5.5 - 6.5 for an ideal growing environment for magnolia seeds. Seeding operation process: Put the prepared soil into the container, gently compact it, then water thoroughly to make the soil fully moist. After the water has fully penetrated, evenly sprinkle the germinated seeds on the soil surface, then cover with a thin layer of soil about 1 - 1.5cm inches thick, pressing gently to make close contact between seeds and soil. The soil should not be too thick to avoid affecting seed germination and emergence; nor should it be too thin, as seeds can easily be exposed to air and moisture evaporates quickly, hindering germination. After sowing is completed, cover the flower pot or planting area with plastic film to maintain soil moisture and temperature, promoting seed germination. Place the flower pot in a cool, ventilated place with a stable temperature of 18 - 22 degrees ℃ Place away from direct sunlight. Direct sunlight may cause the soil temperature to be too high and water to evaporate too quickly, affecting seed germination. Check soil moisture daily to keep soil moist but not waterlogged. If you find that the soil surface is dry, you can use a watering can to spray an appropriate amount of water to keep the soil moist. After about 10 - 15 days, seeds can germinate and break through soil. When the seedlings have grown 2 - 3 true leaves, you can gradually uncover the plastic film to allow them to adapt to the external environment. However, be careful to avoid sudden strong light exposure and temperature changes that could harm the seedlings.
