The Red Herring Levine, Harold Zachary Manuscripts

Original 1918 typed manuscript of Act Two of a play entitled THE RED HERRING (A Farce in Three Acts). The wrapper/cover sheet contains the logo of the stenography company that typed Mr. Levine's script: Z. & L. Rosenfield Stenography Typwriting, New York. The original wrapper is chipped; mid-sized tears at the corners, the paper is very thin typewriter paper from the era and is fragile. Harold Zachary (H. Z.) Levine was the publicity manager for the Solax Film Company, in New Jersey, one of the early film production companies; in his role as publicist, he often contributed to Photoplay magazines as well as other industry publications. Earlier in his career he worked for The Brooklyn Eagle, which in its day was one of the most respected newspapers of the New York City area, and which was known for its extensive use of photographs. Later, he went into the film industry and became advertising manager for Blaché, publicity director in London for the Universal company, advertising manager for Fox, and, by 1916, a purchasing agent for Triangle. This play is listed in the copywright catalogue for January 1918, but no record can be found of a production, nor no known complete copy of the full play.
