Votes For Women Vol V (New Series) No. 230, Friday, August 2, 1912 [Women's Suffrage] [Periodicals] Sharp, Evelyn - Ed Washington,World History

Very interesting issue of this women's suffrage newspaper from the UK which was originally published in 1907 by Emmeline and Frederick Pethick-Lawrence as the official paper of the Women's Social and Political Union. In 1912, the Pethick-Lawrences were arrested in association with one of Christabel Pankhurst's activist campaigns, and subsequently expelled from the WSPU. Evelyn Sharp, a pacifist suffrage leader would take over editorial duties and the paper was published independently from then on. Sharp would go on to found the United Suffragists, a movement in the UK which admitted men and non-militant suffragists alike. This particular issue is addressed, somewhat confusingly, to the editor ofVotes for Women,in Seattle, WA. This newspaper of the same name was started in Seattle in 1909 by Missouri T. B. Hanna (1856-1926) as the organ of the Washington Equal Suffrage Association, which was dedicated to the women's rights movement in the state. Hanna is acknowledged as the first woman newspaper publisher in Washington, starting at theEdmonds Reviewin 1904 and thenVotes for WomenandThe New Citizen, both suffrage publications. A great association between local and international suffrage movements. Newspaper, 16x12" [709]-724pp. Illustrations, advertisements. Typical browning, although mostly along edges due to being in original mailing sleeve which has been opened along the back. Tightly folded from storage with a few small tears along vertical fold else nicely preserved and complete
