A native of Southern Illinois, Stanley Kimmel, known for "The Mad Booths of Maryland" and other historical works on the Civil War, was a talented World War I era poet, an ambulance driver and friend of Ernest Hemingway. Kimmel served on the Western Front in WW1 and in this memoir affectingly describes the brutalities of war.
