This large and colorful topographic planning map of Europe and North Africa was first created by the Army Map Service in 1943. It is reused here, two years later, as the base map for a sheet issued to commemorate the efforts of the AMS across the Mediterranean up until March 1945. Four letters of congratulations are reprinted on three different 'pages' - each offering a well-deserved commendation to the vitally important branch. One note from Robert Patterson, Under Secretary of War, transmitted the Army Map Service's fifth Production Award, granting the agency permission to fly a special flag with four white stars (probably the reference in the title). Between 1941 and 1945, the AMS created nearly 40,000 different maps, printing over half a billion in total for distribution to service personnel, the public, and even prisoners of war. This celebration of their efforts is rare and unlisted in WorldCat as of April 2024. Source."
