Laus Veneris. [ Wise/Forman Forgery ]. Swinburne, A.C. Miscellaneous Books

Contemporary morocco, gilt cover-title, 8vo, 28 pp. Carter & Pollard consider this pamphlet printing of Swinburne's poem at considerable length in 'An Enquiry into the Nature of Certain Nineteenth Century Pamphlets' and show that various statements about it made by Thomas James Wise in his Bibliography of Swinburne are untrue. They note the coincidence of the type used with that of several proven forgeries and conclude: ".there can be no doubt that Laus Veneris was printed after 7 May, 1866; and almost certainly set up from [the 1866] Poems and Ballads. It has, therefore, no status as a first edition; and its typography and provenance associate it with other forgeries". [Todd 293f], Wear to spine and edges, some spotting to contents, otherwise Good.
