A History Of The Highlands And Of The Highland Clans Browne, James

Series published 1835-1839. Sm4to. 9 1/8" x 6". "Illustrated by a Series of Portraits and Other Engravings." Several examples of this work are published in four volumes with two parts in each volume. This offering is in eight separate volumes, identified by Volume number and Part, either I or II. All very good books with green floral decorative cloth covered boards. Darker green labels with light green lettering on spines. The boards and spines are scuffed and stained in general and with various degrees of sunning. Edges at head and tail of board spines are softened and several are frayed. Fore-edge corners are curled and soft and most are rubbed through on the tips. All page edges are age-darkened, soiled and foxed. Text blocks are sound in general, except for: Vol I, Part I, hinge is cracked at lxxii and page 1 where map is partially attached; Vol III, Part I, starting at facing engravings and Armorial Bearings pages, and gutter cracked at page 1; Vol. IV, Part II, the front outside gutter hinge is 85% cracked, and spine is cracked at the back between the last contents page of Vol III and the TP of Vol IV (see below comments on the last pages of Vol IV, Part II). Internal foxing mostly on the front- and back-most pages, and more so on the engravings and tissue-guards. Fold-out map has some foxing and several closed tears along the folds. An old tape repair has been reinforced with archival tape. Text blocks are sound except for Vol. IV, Part II, the front outside gutter hinge is 85% cracked. Several of the individual books have more than one title page, usually found at the back, as described below. The initial title pages state the Vol and Part number, those volumes with an additional title page state only the Vol number. Due to the uniqueness of each volume, the following content descriptions are deviations of standard pagination but hopefully provide the best explanations. All have FFEP and back-free endpapers: Vol I, Part I: 1835. Notice to Subscribers (2), TP, half-title, facing frontispieces with tissue-guard of engravings of Prince Charles Edward Stuart and James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, a second TP stating only Vol I., Address (4), Preliminary Dissertation, Catalogues, and References to the Map of Clans [lxxii], 9-panel fold-out map with pastel outlines, 190pp. Vol I, Part II: 1835. TP, facing engravings with tissue-guard, of Armorial Bearings, 191-447pp. Vol II, Part I: 1836. TP, engraving with tissue-guard of John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount Dundee, facing engravings with tissue-guard, of John Erskine, Earl of Marr and Armorial Bearings, 264pp. Vol II, Part II: 1836. TP, facing engravings with tissue-guard of Archibald Campbell, Marquis of Argyle and James Stuart The Chevalier de St. George, 265-478pp, a second title page stating Vol II. only. Vol III, Part I: 1839 (This appears to be a later edition.) TP, facing engravings with tissue-guard, of the Armorial Bearing of Scotland with the words Nemo me impune lacesset, Latin for 'No one provokes me with impunity" the national motto of Scotland, and James, Earl of Derwentwater, facing engravings with tissue-guard of Armorial Bearings, 264pp. Vol III, Part II: 1835. TP, facing engravings with tissue-guard of Armorial Bearings, 265-504pp., a second title page stating Vol. III only. Vol IV, Part I: 1836. TP, facing engravings with tissue-guard of Armorial Bearings, 240pp. Vol IV, Part II: 1838. TP, facing engravings with tissue-guard of William Duke of Cumberland and the Battle of Culloden, 241-501pp. Thereafter, this last volume has the addition of the title pages of all four volumes stating only the Vol number (not Part), all with publication dates of 1838, and also including Content pages - in brackets, for all four. The following begins after pp. 501: The same half-title page as that in Vol I, Part I; the Armorial Bearing of Scotland facing TP Vol. I [x]; TP Vol. II [vii]; TP Vol. III [vi]; TP Vol. IV [vii].
