Gordon (1832-1914) fought in India as a British army officer. He subsequently served as the Military Attache to the British Legation in Tehran (present day Iran). Gordon also participated in the second Yarkand mission that traveled from India over the Tibetan Plateau and the Pamirs to Chinese Turkestan (an account of which Gordon published in 1876 as "The Roof of the World"). Gordon revisited Persia in 1894 and published this book as an attempt to show evidence of the "progress and improvement" he found. As well as personal observations from both this visit and his previous service in Tehran, Gordon acknowledges information drawn from well know authors including Malcol, Fraser, Watson, and Curzon. Photos include portraits of the late Shah Nasr ed-Din on the Peacock Throne, the current Shah Mozuffer ed-Din, a female pipe bearer, Persian ladies, a medicant Dervish, an Armenian mother and children, and a Turk of the military tribes.
