This is a handsome, fine binding edition of "The Poetical Works of JAMES RUSSELL LOWELL." Also included is a biographical sketch of Lowell at the front. 1898; Thomas Y. Crowell and Company; New York. Nicely bound in full leather with a cameo of Lowell inlaid on the front cover, gilt page edges on all sides of the text block, decorative end papers, gilt lettering and decorations on the front cover and spine, and a ribbon page marker. There is a frontispiece portrait of Lowell with a tissue guard. The contents are grouped as follows: Biographical Sketch; Early Poems; Miscellaneous Poems; Memorial Verses. Condition: Clean covers and spine. The leather has torn at the top-right corner of the front cover, and has scuffed at the other 3 cover corners. Small tears to the leather at the top of the spine. There are a couple tiny tears to the leather surrounding the cameo on the front cover. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Bright gilt page edges on all sides of the text block. Nice interior - the pages are clean with only tanning to pages 264/265 and 288/280 from old newspaper clippings left between, and a shadow outline of the ribbon page marker on pages 42 & 43. The ribbon page marker is present but has detached. There is an inscription dated 1918 written in pencil on the front end paper. Overall the book is in Good condition.
