How Wars Are Fought: The Principles Of Strategy And Tactics. Whitman, J. E. A.

First and sole edition, first impression; copies in the attractive jacket are particularly scarce. Whitman, a former Royal Artillery officer, gives a succinct, generously illustrated overview from antiquity through to the First World War, concluding with "The Tactics of 1940" and the German blitzkrieg in Western Europe. The reviewer in the US Army's Field Artillery Journal described it as "not a technical treatise for experienced professional soldiers, though many might read it with benefit. It is, rather, an elementary introduction to the science of generalship. The book is interestingly written, contains none of the dry subject matter you might expect. It is a good beginning for the beginner". The Field Artillery Journal, February 1943. Octavo. Original moderate bluish green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black. With dust jacket, artwork by W. Holz. With 16 plans and diagrams in the text (all but 2 full page). Top edge a little dusty, light foxing to fore edge, offsetting from pastedowns to front free endpapers; jacket spine sunned, some nicks, chips and closed tears: an excellent copy in a good jacket.
