Poetry, A Magazine Of Verse - Vol. I, No. Vi, March 1913 Ezra Pound; F. S. Flint; Harriet Monroe, Editor

One of the most important issues of Poetry, Vol. I No. 6 contains the first appearance of Ezra Pound’s Imagisme (attributed to F. S. Flint, but rewritten from a draft of Pound’s) and A Few Don’ts by an Imagiste, two inestimably important Modernist texts which have been reproduced and are referenced endlessly. Though written, as it were, in the negative, A Few Don’ts by an Imagist reveals the development of Pound’s poetic criticism as it nears the Imagist doctrine. A Few Don’ts serves as a supplement to Imagisme where the 3 point position is stated, in short: 1. Direct treatment of the ‘thing’; 2. To use no word that does not contribute; 3. To compose music, not the metronome. One year later the anthology Des Imagistes was published in The Glebe (later the Poetry Bookshop, London, and Charles and Albert Boni, New York). Amy Lowell developed or promoted her own Imagism into a poetry that differed from Pound’s, and Pound diverted from what he labelled Amygism, going on to conceive Vorticism with Wyndham Lewis. This is a fine copy. The oversized paper wraps have a few small tears as visible, which is a result of their larger than leaf sizing and is very usual for copies of Poetry. No other flaws. Revelant Gallup indices are C73a and C74.
