Discours Sur L'esprit Positif. Comte, Auguste.

First edition of this accessible manifesto for philosophical positivism, one of 400 copies issued. The Discours develops Comte's theory of class structure and refines his concepts of humanity and morality, while targeting a non-specialist audience. Comte's tract developed from the opening lecture of his yearly course on popular astronomy, delivered to Parisian workers. Although slender, it is often cited along Comte's larger works in studies of his philosophy. Octavo (212 x 131 mm). Contemporary quarter calf, spine ruled in black and gilt, with raised bands and green morocco label, marbled paper sides and endpapers, edges sprinkled blue, blue silk bookmarker. Light rubbing, faint sunning to spine, foxing to endpapers and contents: a very good copy.
