First edition, first printing, presentation copy from the Commandant of the Marine Corps, inscribed on the front free endpaper "To May and Jack Spaulding - with our best wishes. Wallace M. Greene, Jr. General, U.S. Marine Corps Commandant. Washington - 18-19 November, 1964"; his wife Vaughan H. Greene has also signed. Jack Spaulding (1924-1966), whose family bookplate is above the inscription, served Greene as aide-de-camp for three years and commanded the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines in Vietnam. The Home of the Commandants was established in Washington in 1801 as the official residence of the Commandant of the Marine Corps. The book narrates its history and the service of previous Commandants. Greene served as 23rd Commandant from 1964 to 1967, overseeing the military buildup in Southeast Asia and US troops entering South Vietnam, and the massive increase in the size of the Marine Corps. Vaughan Greene accompanied him on ceremonial events, including the launching of ships. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in black, front cover lettered and decorated in grey and black.
