First edition, first printing, inscribed on the verso of the front wrapper by both authors, "To Barbara, who made the 3rd Model of the Universe possible, with love Richard", "and with all good wishes, Joe". This is a rare and important study of the tarot which cites early Gnostics, alchemists, Dante, and Jung. Campbell (1904-1987) was a professor of literature at Sarah Lawrence College who focused primarily on comparative mythology and religion. His concept of monomyth, in which all mythic narratives are variations on the same story, is far-reaching, and George Lucas has noted the influence of Campbell's work on the Star Wars saga. He and tarot scholar Richard Roberts collaborated on this work, praised by Theodore Rozak as "the most serious study of the Tarot I have seen" (front wrapper). Octavo. Original purple and white wrappers lettered in purple and white. Illustrations to the text, folding colour plate of the Major Arcana at rear. Extremities a little rubbed, slight crease to head of front wrapper, a few passages in Part I underlined in purple pencil: a near-fine copy.
