CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: For many reasons, this is an excellent book. This fine cavalry regiment served, largely, in the Army of the Cumberland, and later in the Military Division of Mississippi. The unit served as an independent unit reporting directly to the headquarters of the Army of the Cumberland. Its duties included escort, scouting, courier and other details for the commanding general. Composed of hand-picked, it became the favorite unit of both Generals William Rosecrans and George Thomas. The material used from the Colton brothers illustrates the very human side of campaigning and fighting, as well as languishing in a Confederate prison and later furloughed. Illustrated with 12 maps and 49 photographs, this is visually and textually terrific. Printed by the Northland Press in Flagstaff, this is a superior printed product; Northland Press is long recognized as a publisher of fine printed books. REFERENCES: DORN PA 95: Cover illustration in color. Includes selections from the diaries and letter of Mathias Baldwin Colton, 1839-1915, and William Francis Colton. 1841-1921. Index 35 p. Battle lines at Chattanooga plan, endpapers. NEVINS I pg 180; A unique and valuable unit history, based for the most part on the recollections of two brothers in the regiment; this study is too often underrated. MULLINS/REED #204.
