Lower King Street, Charleston - Signed Etching Elizabeth O'neill Verner American Art,Prints

Wonderful etching by Elizabeth O'Neill Verner (American/South Carolina, 1883-1979). Titled "Lower King Street, Charleston" The etching is unnumbered and undated but by research appears to be printed in 1928, signed lower right "Elizabeth O'Neill Verner" , titled lower left "Lower King Street, Charleston", etching, plate approx 5 x 3-3/8 in. This etching can be found in the National Gallery of Art, Washington and The Charleston Museum amongst other collections. Elizabeth O'Neill Verner was an artist, author, lecturer, and preservationist who was one of the leaders of the Charleston Renaissance. She has been called "the best-known woman artist of South Carolina of the twentieth century." Verner is noted for her depictions of her hometown, which she infused with the charm and local color that distinguishes Charleston. In land- and cityscapes, Verner often focused on the architecture and environment while de-emphasizing any human presence. Because of this she was hired by other cities throughout the South, to document the beauty of their buildings and grounds, including: the Mount Vernon Ladies Association; Rockefeller Center; Historic Williamsburg; the City of Fayetteville; Harvard Medical School; the United States Military Academy; Princeton University; and the University of South Carolina. Her subject matter is notable for its documentation of the shifting socio-political landscape of the American South, focused on portraying African Americans recently extricated from antebellum slavery and poverty. This work is a Black ink etching on paper depicting a woman balancing a basket on her head walking toward the artist. Verner has illustrated the scene from the front of the Miles Brewton House (27 King Street) with the balcony of 23 King visible to the right. the work comes in a period frame and as such would incur extra shipping charges. Overall frame approx 16 x 10 3/4 ins overall. Label on the back from Lanneau's Art Store, 238 King Street, Charleston, SC. This artwork has not been taken out of its frame but appears in good condition. I have a 2nd Verner etching listed too.
