First edition (first printing, with a 1923 date on the title page and no indication of later printings). This is an ex-library copy, with remnants of a pocket on the rear pastedown; a hint of spine label residue on the spine, a seminary ink-stamp on the front pastedown, and a five-digit ID number on the copyright page. With a later owner's bookplate and the posthumous bookplate of Stephen Jay Gould, from whose office library this copy came. Gould wrote about Spearman extensively in his book The Mismeasure of Man.
