L'enfer De Breendonck. Fischer, Frans.

First edition, first printing, of this memoir of the Breendonk prison camp in Belgium, published soon after its liberation in September 1944. Shortly after the fall of Belgium, the SS requisitioned Breendonk, a military fort, and converted it into a prison camp for the detention of political prisoners and Jews. Although never officially designated a concentration camp, it was notorious for its poor conditions, torture, and executions, and for acting as a transit point to other concentration camps in Eastern Europe. The author Frans Fischer (1875-1949) was a Belgian socialist politician imprisoned in the camp in 1941 because of his anti-Nazi statements. His account of his experiences is one of the earliest expositions of Nazi crimes to be published in Belgium. It was printed while many other German prisons and concentration camps still awaited liberation and the full horrors of the Holocaust had yet to be discovered. Octavo. Original red and black wrappers. Tape reinforcement at spine ends, contents a little toned, sticker residue to contents page. A good copy.
