The Tapestry is a huge embroidered cloth depicting the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England in 1066 and the Battle of Hastings. It is believed to date to the 11th century. Contents include a foreword by M. Jean Le Carpentier, mayor of Bayeux, preface, introduction, folding map, followed by narrative about the inscriptions, the commentary, the story told in the tapestry, style art and form, buildings dress and objects. Each portion of the tapestry is shown with full color full page photographic illustrations. Large, heavy hardcover, 10.5x13.5 inches, x14 inches, 234 pages, in original slipcase. Slipcase and book covered in grey cloth; book has large gilt titles on the front and spine. Slipcase matches on one side and on the other there is a paste-on illustration from one of the tapestry's pages. Very good condition, light soil to bottom left hand corner of back of slipcase. No writing or inscriptions. Very handsome volume.
