An interesting legacy presentation bible in the gift of Lord Philip Wharton, 4th Baron Wharton (1613-1696). He was an English soldier, politician and diplomat. After his death, his will supported the foundation of a Christian Bible charity which would distribute bibles to impoverished children for their use outside of school or church. Children had to learn 7 specified psalms and the Shorter Catechism by rote. Lord Wharton had started this effort 6 years prior to his death and left 463 acres of his land in his will to provide funding for the enterprise. The nme and age of the recipient would be written in the bible. In this example, the name has been removed, but we can see the recipient was 12 years old. Raised bands to spine. With light wear and some loss to the leather at the head of spine. Bound with fully functioning brass metal clasps. This would have felt like a very special gift to a child in 1843. The first pastedown carries a script presentation inscription with a tear while the child's name has been removed. There is also a printed label explaining the background of the presentation. Some wear to the page edges of the first few pages from the brass clasps. Text is clean and bright throughout.
