Situated 360 kilometers east of Moscow, Palekh, a small yet historically rich town, emerged as a pivotal center for Russian artistry, particularly noted for its intricate icon paintings. After the 1917 October Revolution significantly disrupted this tradition, Palekh artists adeptly transitioned to crafting lacquered papier-mâché objects. This innovative shift was spearheaded by Ivan I. Golikov in 1922, who applied traditional icon-painting techniques to a papier-mâché box, marking a new artistic era. This change culminated in the establishment of the Artel of Ancient Painting in 1924, where artists began incorporating local folklore and revolutionary themes into their works. These pieces quickly gained acclaim, leading to the formal recognition and support of their craft with the opening of the State Museum of Palekh Arts in 1935. This 1932 exhibition catalog represents a crucial moment in Palekh's history, capturing the successful fusion of heritage and innovation that defined its art in the early 20th century.
