This work is an important visual and narrative record of information and insights of the war in the Shenandoah during 1864. Taylor followed the Federal troops in the Shenandoah Valley and produced detailed drawings and notes of everything he viewed; his sketches, became engravings and published in Leslie s Illustrated magazine. In addition, his own personal story is included as the text and is mixed with his extraordinary visual record. Taylor was an eyewitness to many of the extraordinary events of the Shenandoah region in 1864, including the battles of Winchester, Fishers Hill, Toms Brook, and Cedar Creek.
