Thomas Cole Oil On Canvas - Window In The Hudson Original Art, Estate Art, Graphics

Thomas Cole oil painting: The painting is signed and dated 1838. The age of the canvas is sufficient to match the dating, and the subject appears to be Rockwell Falls on the Hudson at Lake Luzerne. I made inquiry at the Thomas Cole National Historic Site regarding the location of the falls shown in the painting, and thanks to a staff person at the Site, they suggested Rockwell Falls. I feel reasonably comfortable with the Rockwell Falls location since many photos of the Falls are taken from a perspective similar to the perspective of the artist of my Cole painting, that is, down stream, to the right of the Falls, and from an elevation. Of course it's impossible to be sure since the artist isn't a copyist. The painting has damage with a somewhat long crack to the left. The original painting has been mounted on a backing canvas of a later dating, with the whole attached to the stretchers (also later dating) by means of the backing canvas. Size of the painting is 18" x 28". The frame has a brass plaque engraved 'Window In The Hudson / Thomas Cole.' Lots of other art available. (5930)
