"This is an excellent example of the 1926 edition of The Automobile Blue Book, covering the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern states between Pennsylvania and Louisiana. Over 750 pages of route lists, city plans, advertisements, travel tips, and various maps are contained within the iconic blue covers. Insets of simple road junctions and downtown areas are accompanied by more complex maps, created for promotional purposes. Also included is a large folding map (with handy plastic sleeve!) that serves as an index and covers the entire region. The volume would have been of particular use to the numerous travelers heading to Philadelphia for the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition of 1926. The Automobile Blue Book, published in Chicago from 1901 to 1937, served as a crucial guide for early American motorists. Often lacking numbered highways (introduced in Wisconsin in 1918), these extensive volumes provided detailed, point-to-point directions across the United States and Canada. Geared towards scenic routes rather than the fastest paths, the Blue Book also offered trip-planning advice and state road regulations. By the 1910s, it had become the "standard publication" for road travel, aiding the burgeoning American love affair with the automobile and motor tourism.
