Following his implication in the Popish Plot and his vicious persecution of conventicles and maltreatment of nobles, Lauderdale's position as a leading figure in the rule of Scotland was compromised, with many in the English Commons calling for his dismissal. This pamphlet, issued as a part of the campaign by Lauderdale's adversaries in parliament, emphasises his popish tendencies and contempt of Commons.
