Delafield's defining title and a classic of domestic literature - critics on both sides of the Atlantic greeted it with great enthusiam. It initially appeared in weekly instalments in Time and Tide - the feminist weekly. The diary is the (largely autobiographical) chronicle of the disaster prone "day to day" life of a wife and mother living a frugal life in the Devonshire country - "above all it is fun".
