Autograph Letter, Signed. Mill, J.S. (John Stuart).

Embossed letterhead, "Blackheath Park", two pages, blank conjugate leaf. Dated March 16, no year (but 1866), to an unknown correspondent: "As soon as Mr. Gladstone had named Thursday the 12th for the second reading of the Reform Bill, I went to the Speaker's Secretary's office to put down your name, but found unfortunately that it cannot be done more than a week beforehand. I fear, therefore, you will have to apply to some other of your Parliamentary friends. I shall not be in England during Easter week, and by the time I return the list is almost sure to be already filled up". The second reading of the Reform Bill of 1867 was on Thursday, April 12, 1866 (U.K. Parliament historical website). Mill was an M.P. from 1865-1868. His suggestion to replace "man" with "person" was not successful (Wikipedia). This letter in Fine condition.
